Welcome to Wombat Springs Bee Keeping

This page is dedicated to Australian Bee Keeping and in particular Bee Keeping in the Canberra and surrounding NSW Area.

SEASON UPDATE

The 2003-2004 season is off to a better start then I expected. We have had a good bit of rain in early spring and the swarming season is well underway. Hopfully with a good flowing season for gums and Patterson's Curse (Salvation Jane) we may get a decent honey crop.

WOW! Bees are swarming everywhere. I received 7 calls for bee swarms in one day in early October and was able to get to 4 of them.

I have plans to brew some Mead (honey wine) this season. I will try and post a reciept and the method I use (if I get the time)

Got a "Bee Problem" Have a look at my Bee Swarms and Problem Bees Web Page.

I live in Queanbeyan NSW and Wombat Springs is the property where my apiary is located, in the Cooma District of NSW, approx 100 km south of Canberra.

Introduction

In my quest for more information about apiculture I thought I would put a web page together to help those who are thinking of taking up Bee Keeping but are not sure where to start or for those who are just interested in finding out more information. I have found that the majority of information available on the web is from America and Europe. My intent is to take this information and convert it into a more usable format for Australian conditions and in particular NSW and ACT conditions.
I currently have around 12 hives with the number increasing regularly as I collect more swarms.
DIY - (Do it Yourself)

I believe in DIY particularly when it comes to Bee Keeping. There are a few reasons for this:

Saving in cost and outlay.
Better understanding of how things work.
Better appreciation when things DO work.

Though I also believe people should know there limitations and only undertake projects they think they can handle.

I will give as much, detail as I can, in these pages on items I have contructed myself, including plans either my own or links to other sites some of which have excelent plans for Bee hives, etc.
